Sisters of Providence (S.P.)
St. Paul's Hospital, Vancouver
St. Mary's Hospital, New Westminster |
The Sisters of Providence came to Western Canada and established St. Mary's Hospital in New Westminster in 1886. The 25-bed St. Paul's Hospital opened in 1894. Both Hospitals are still owned and operated by the Sisters. Today the Sisters, numbering about 1500 world-wide, serve in Canada, the U.S. Haiti, Chile, Argentina, El Salvador, The Philippines, Egypt and the Cameroon, continuing their heritage of providing compassionate care and drawing on trust in God's Providence passed to them by their Foundress, Mother Gamelin.
In British Columbia the Sisters continue to serve at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver, and Saint Mary's Hospital, in New Westminster.
Our Mission: The Sisters of Providence health care institutions continue the healing ministry of Jesus in the world today, with special concern for those who are poor and vulnerable. Working with others in a spirit of loving service, we strive to meet the health needs of people as they journey through life.
