Missionary Sisters of Jesus of Nazareth (M.S.J.N.)
Mater Ecclessiae Convent, Powell River

Our Motto: "Jesus of Nazareth Who I have seen and loved."

The Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of Jesus of Nazareth was founded in Malta by Miss Guzeppina Curmi . Her charisma was that of Simplicity, Humility and Charity. On March 12, 1934, the Archbishop of Malta canonically erected the Congregation as a Religious Community (after due authorization given by the Holy See).

In October 1961 after a written request by the Pastor of Assumption Church, Powell River B.C. the superiors sent the first six Sisters to Powell River. Three days after their arrival, Assumption Elementary School was opened, and the six Sisters went to teach in the school from grade one to grade seven.

Apart from teaching in the school, the Sisters taught C.C.D. to the many children who did not attend the Catholic school. During weekends and holidays they did many home visits in the parish.

Presently there are only two Sisters still teaching in the school. Apart from teaching, the Community is involved in visiting the sick in the hospital, the elderly in the Extended Care Unit and in their homes, are involved with the Faith and Light program, and work with the First Nation people. The Sisters are still involved in teaching in the C.C.D. program, and help as Eucharistic Ministers in the parish.

In September 1994 another house was opened in North Vancouver B.C. Two Sisters from the Convent of Powell River moved to Holy Trinity Parish. These two Sisters are involved with the C.C.D. and the R.C.I.A. programs. They work with the elderly, do pastoral work in the parish and take Holy Communion to the sick.

The Congregation has also a Mission in Peru, where the Sisters take care of orphans and abandoned children as well as teach Catechism and spread the Good News among the Inca people.

Following the charism of the Foundress the Congregation has a home for the elderly, a home for children who come from broken homes, a hostel for young girls, a day care centre to help single mothers while they go to work, and a home where the Sisters look after a Community of priests.

All the Missionary Sisters of Jesus of Nazareth wear the full modified religious habit which identifies them as a religious community.
